Last year, Congress recognized the physical, emotional, and financial turmoil caused by Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and declared December 1-7 as Crohn's and Colitis Awareness Week. It is extremely hard for someone to relate to Crohn's or colitis who is unfamiliar with it.
This disease is a physical and emotional rollercoaster for those who suffer and those of loved ones who suffer. I personally have watch the fear, confussion, heart ache of my family each time I have been sick and through 16 surgeries. As a wife. Mother, daughter, etc my heart breaks to see it in their eyes. I am not only in major physical pain but what I have put my family through causes much emotional pain. Therefore most of us wear a mask to hide their pain. Crohn's isn't always talked about because of the nature of the disease and what it effects is embarrassing to many but it can be very debilitating when not in remission. Also for me long term drug maintenance is now starting to show their side effects causing more stress. Tell someone you know or love, that you care, educate yourself on the disease so you understand what they need or are going through. Most of just be there!
